Earthquakes abound…but why?

December 30, 2009 - 8:27 pm No Comments

wow-cataclysm1

As many people are reporting earthquakes appear to be happening in the game and from what reports are saying they are tied to the release of Cataclysm. This is a bit surprising to be honest. While Blizzard is known for doing in-game world event for it’s expansions we all remember the Ziggarots (not sure if that is right) and the zombie plague before Wrath was released. But if this is a sign of Cataclysm why so early?

Logically the expansion is months if not just shy of a year from release. WoW the original stand alone game was released in November and the first two expansion have also been released in the winter months. I myself as well as many others fully expect the next expansion to be in November as well.

So this is a little perplexing as to what Blizzard is up too. If you have any ideas I’d love to hear them as I have no clue what they are planning for us. With the recent release of patch 3.3 and a good while before we even confront Arthas this is indeed an odd ball move.

What do you all think?

Tanking Tidbits No.3

December 29, 2009 - 1:02 pm No Comments

daredevil

Be a man without fear! A Daredevil if you will.

This tidbit comes from an experience I had recently and I’m sure many of you have undoubtedly had this experience. Your in a group and a tank pulls a group then a second or possible even third group comes along and now your under the gun with as little as 8-10 mobs or maybe more.

Your tank does not have faith in the healer and sees his health dropping dangerously low and begins to panic. They may or may not pop some “save me” buttons but they start to slowly back up and then just ignore the group getting threat and just looking to stay alive themselves before they ultimately just tuck their tail and run.

This for the folks wanting to be a tank or even those that are tanks, CAN NOT HAPPEN! You need to realize first, this is a game and yes you will die sometimes and it’s okay. If your worried about your repair bill, go run a daily and pay for it. Your a tank and can’t tuck your tail and get out of Dodge. Your the captain of the ship so to speak and you need to go down with it. I’ve been in this situation a few times (by accident of course) and I stand my ground and trust my healers. Most times we may lose all our DPS but the group or raid does not fail because I keep taunting and pulling threat to me and keeping my healers uninterrupted and alive and thus I remain alive. Being a Pally tank I pop all my cool downs and make their job easier and simply rez the rest of the group back up once all the mobs are down. Then there are sometimes where we all die, yes the dreaded wipe. It does happen and you need to get over it.

I can’t stress enough how important it is, for you as a tank, to remain calm, cool and collected in situations of stress. Sure if you live most of the thanks go to the healer for keeping the group alive but you’d be surprised how many pats on the back you’ll get for being a good tank and sticking to your guns and refusing to run.

Now that being said don’t be stupid and stand your ground when you pull a few mobs and then a boss by accident. That’s a whole different ballgame. If it’s a raid boss then you start running like Usane Bolt to the finish line. There is no sense in basically taking on a boss unprepared and wiping in a matter of seconds.

I know this is a short tidbit but it’s also a very important tip, rule of thumb, lesson to live by…all those good things.

Enjoy and tank with no fear!

“Tanking Tidbits No. 2″

paladin

Welcome back to “Tanking Tidbits” for tidbit number 2. In this segment I want to talk about what type of person should be a tank and if you chose to be a tank what can you expect.

First, what type of person makes a good tank. Technically anyone can play the class but it takes a certain type of individual to make a great tank. Your mindset or personality really does impact the class/spec you want to play. As for a tank you need to have patience…first and foremost. You never want to be over zealous and just say “Eh, I got good healing, let’s take these two groups!” Bad things can happen. You need to be aware of where your party is at all times. Look at your map, if you see a party member a few ticks back, turn around and make sure they are ready and not AFK. If your going to pull and you feel it could be a hard hitting group make sure you ask your team if they are ready. Nothing is worse then pulling a group when your team is not ready. If there is a pat that’s walking and they have a long path rotation and you don’t feel like waiting for the next pass to pull … STOP breathe and be patient. A lot of wipes happen from tanks that pull when they are impatient. As a tank you also need to be a leader, that being said there are plenty of raid groups that have raid leaders that are all different classes. But as a Tank your role is sort of looked upon as a natural leader and your team puts a lot of faith into you to make wise decisions and pulls. If your personality is a “KILL KILL KILL” type odds are this isn’t for you. Tanks need to have a level head and be able to think on the fly and have a good understanding how to approach any situation in front of them.

Now what can you expect as a tank? This is a long list…there are things like stress management, quick thinking, problem solving, heavy damage/repair bills, blame for wipes, low damage and much more. I’ll just touch on a few of these. Stress is a major one. Tanks and Healers go hand and hand here for stress. Because if a group wipes it’s usually blamed on one or the other. It’s not very often that DPS is blamed unless they run out like headless chickens and pull mobs when they shouldn’t have. If tanks make a mistake, it’s pointed out RIGHT AWAY. This is mostly because other players don’t understand the process but you need to have a thick skin (that goes for your personality as well). When you pull a group and a patrol walks by and comes into the fray as well and was totally unexpected you need to be relaxed and just suck it up and manage the situation. Mostly likely when that happens your healer is going to be generating a lot of threat and will need to be saved, use whatever methods your class tank has to pull aggro off them or any other members. This is a good time to mention party member priority. If your group is under the gun and you see their health dropping and more then one member is taking aggro you need to be able to quickly think who needs to be saved first and throw out a direct taunt to save them. Almost always the healer would be your first save….if not you need to know which melee has the most DPS to help you down the current mob and save them. Having the addon “recount” is a must. This will show you how much DPS your team is doing and you can see who should be saved first. If your team is doing a raid or dungeon for the first time or on a tricky encounter you need to be able to solve the encounter figure out how to move, kite or position the boss and protect your group. This comes from practice and reading strats on the internet or from just wipe, rinse and re-try. Lastly, damage bills. If you don’t have a lot of gold then pick another spec or start running dailies. As a tank you’ll be in plate, unless your a druid tank, and repair bills are expensive. You’ll be amazed how much those bills stack up.

Think all this over and see if this fits you. I’ll drop another tidbit after Christmas, till then!

“Tanking Tidbits No. 1″

zach_tlahtsi_paladin-tank-dummies

Welcome to Tanking Tidbits number one. In these little segments I’m going to be explaining some things about tanks ie. how to spec, how to hold threat, what is our job, stats and more. I know there are plenty of sites that have helpful info on tanking, “TankSpot” being one of them. But I find that forums are rough places to get info sometimes. If your a player who is unsure of how to ask things or new to tanking you can take a lot of heat posting on forums and usually will get blasted by some player who’s way to sarcastic and plainly just a douche bag. At Valaar.com I’m going to break things down and open the posts to comments, BUT, if I see a comment that is counter-productive then I’ll get rid of it. I want to help those players looking for a place to get good info and have a good conversation.

Now onto the Tidbits!

As for Number one, I’m going to start with something simple. Defense and what it means. I’ll be using reference to WoWWiki to better explain things in detail but I’ll explain the jest of it. Odds are if your looking to become a tank in WoW then your either still leveling up or are sitting at 80 wondering if you should and what’s the first step to take. If you don’t have a set of “Tank Armor” then your going to need to start collecting. Let’s start with the leveling folks. As your leveling it’s not really worth gathering tanking armor unless your around 70 for instances of that nature but before that it’s really not relevant. In fact I wouldn’t even suggest leveling as a tank spec until 70 unless your just looking for practice on how to lead a team with pulling, marking and so forth. I will say as a pally I leveled Protection (tank) 70 to 80 and it went fairly quick as you can tackle more mobs at once. Just a note, keep a lot of Mana Pots on you and use Blessing of Wisdom. But 70 is a good time to go tank as you can start doing instances like Nexus and Azjol Nerub. Your going to want to keep items with Defense on it. When you do hit that magical number of 80 then your going to be ready for heroics. This is where your going to start getting your “Tanking Epics”. The whole point here is for two stats, Defense and Stamina. If your going to tank raids you need to have a defense cap of 540. That is the “Special” number. Why? Well being “capped” at 540 means that any boss mob that’s level 83 (those are elite raid bosses) won’t be able to deliver a critical strike to you. Your defense will mitigate the strike and keep you alive and your healer happy. At WoWWiki you can see the break down here under Critical Hits.

At first you might be frustrated and wonder how am I going to reach 540 as soon as you hit 80. Now with patch 3.3 it’s even easier then when Wrath of the Lich King was released. You’ll be able to do a few heroics via the new Looking for Group feature and collect those badges. Getting gear now is the easy part. Just make sure along the way you don’t forget to raise your rep with the factions around Northrend. There are enchants for your head and shoulders that you’ll need to boost your stats. Sons of Hodir is an important one unless your a scribe and can enchant your own shoulders.

Something I suggest to all players, not just tanks, is Atlas Loot. This is an addon that puts a little treasure chest on your map. Clicking on it will open a window that will let you pick a dungeon or raid and show a list of bosses and what they drop. This is extremely helpful for figuring out what dungeon or raid you need next to get that piece of armor that will put you over the top or complete a set. Check it out here.

Along with Defense is Stamina. As a tank your going to need a big health pool. Since your going to be taking a lot of damage and the skills of healers can range your stamina is your fall back to stay alive. The more HP the more time you buy while your healer is off yelling at their dog, kid or girlfriend and not watching you. Don’t have some, get some. Once your defense is capped and you don’t risk falling below 540 Stam it up with gems, enchants, and trinkets.

That is a good little starter. I know this is probable elementary for some but for those who are interested or new to the spec it’s a stepping stone.

If you have any questions even if it doesn’t pertain to this top, please feel free to ask!

I’ll be back with more!

December 22, 2009 - 5:02 pm No Comments

Hey all I’m going to be starting a Tanking 101 so to speak. I understand there places like tankspot but I find sometime forums are confusing and can be frustrated when people ask questions and get a very cynical answer or just rudeness. So I’m going to be dropping little “Tanking Tidbits” which I’ll be calling them. Look for them later today!!

Till then,

Snowed In

December 22, 2009 - 8:30 am No Comments

Sorry for the lack of updates over the weekend. If your in the Northeast then you may know what I’m speaking of, a BLIZZARD.
Yes a blizzard and not the kind that makes games either. I live in Maryland where we just got pounded with 22″ inches (just shy of two feet) of snow. So my weekend consisted of shoveling out two cars, a walkway and sidewalk. Not to mention playing with my son and teaching him how to use a sleigh.

Regular posts will start back up today, I apologize for the inconvenience this weather has caused.

Thanks,

Val
